Edible Flowers

Have you ever eaten an edible flower?

Are you the first to give new things a try?

Or a bit wary, letting someone else be the guinea pig?

This past spring I threw some Nasturtium seeds in the flower garden. To be honest at the time I didn't know that they are edible.

Luckily all my friends did!

OK I was a bit wary to give them a gobble.

So all summer I enjoyed the bright blooms and the cool lily pad looking leaves.

  With these last blooms of the season, I thought I would celebrate with a cupcake.

 And the edible flowers.

 Let's be honest.....the flowers are pretty,

 but it's the sugary frosting we are all dreaming about!!!!

And that is what I ate, the frosting. I tried the flower but it just tasted like a flower!!! The frosting tasted like frosting, can you blame me? Actually I shared half with the hubby, but only because he was standing there waiting for me to eat the flower, which he didn't ask to share by the way. Not like the cupcake which he said, now we are sharing that, right?

Halloween Tags

  Are you looking forward to autumn? Are the fall colors inspiring some creativity?

At Paper Daisies our local scrapbook store, the owner/operator Wendy, has all kinds of inspirational ideas.                                                                    

 These cute tags are from a recent class at the store that Pookie and I took.

We love Wendy's creative style!

We used Graphic 45 paper for these tags.

We made three tags.

She designed all three tags. Each one unique!!

I hope these tags give you some Halloween inspiration.

How My Sister Would Embellish a Plant Container

So I have this metal plant container that shall we say... has seen better days.

 As you can see in the photo below I can now call it vintage!

 This container has been part of my backyard flower groupings for 20 years now. (I made sure I got my moneys worth with this!!)

I thought about letting it go this spring, but instead adopted the attitude that the rusty hole at the bottom of the container, just made for better drainage.

The petunias must agree they are pretty happy in their vintage, shabby chic home.

Everyday when I would water the petunias, I would think this container needs some jazzing up! I didn't feel like painting it with the flowers already growing in it. Although I will definitely be painting it before next summer. So for now I decided to embellish it. All the usual embellishments went through my mind, rhinestones, ribbon, lace, tiles and then the obvious hit me...numbers!! You know the big number trend you see on dressers and cabinets all over Pinterest.

Now I just had to choose which numbers to go with. I will admit I like 3 and 7. But because of the circumference of the container the 3 and 7 together would have looked a bit odd since they wouldn't have laid flat. As I stood there in the aisle at Home Depot trying to choose a number, I could hear my sister say "how about #16?" pausing here for a second to let all the people that love my sister have a good laugh.....

 My sister loves Joe Montana who played decades years ago for the SF 49er's. Joe wore #16 when he played for the Niners back in the day. I knew it was the right number for this vintage container.

Below are two pictures from last summer with some alyssum growing in the container.

Back to this summer, the petunias are happy, my sister is happy,

Joe sure looks happy!!

Also my youngest son is turning 16 in a few weeks so I am really feeling like the number 16 was the right choice!!

And that is how my sister would embellish a plant container!!

Years ago my Mom picked up this fabulous framed planter at a garage sale.

 I remember seeing it at her condo and hoping it was for me!

 Yea it was for me!!!

 As much as I love it I have found it hard to keep plants alive in the small pots. Below is a picture from last year with some Alyssum growing in the pots. I had to water these little pots twice if not three times a day. If I missed a watering the plants would be near death.

 So this year I went fake, fake flowers that is. I still can't believe I did it!!

 I waited until Michaels had their silk flowers on sale for 40% off. Then shopping I went! I picked out all the dangling white flowers I could find and one fake creeping Jenny for some green.

 So far they have fooled everyone who has seen them! I love it! People don't really look that close, not sure if that is a good thing or not. Of course I can't keep it secret. Why I am compelled to "confess" to people that they are fake flowers I don't know. I guess I feel like a "fake" gardener!

At first I thought I would have to put some Styrofoam in the pots and stick the stems into it, to hold them in place. But I ended up just folding the stems up and putting them in the pots without any Styrofoam. The pots are so small everything fits and stays put even on windy days.

 The rest of my "real" flowers are thriving. Yes I added this last photo to prove to you I mean to show you that I do have some living plants!

 Are you guilty of any garden embellishing? As a serious gardener it was a really hard choice for me to make, to go fake. Ultimately it was a decision made from frustration. Remembering to water those small pots several times a day aagghhhh, it drove me crazy!

4th of July Tags

Do you love the color combo of red, white and blue?

I hope so because I have some patriotic tags to share with you today.

 The local scrapbook store (Paper Daisies) holds a tag class every month. Wendy the store owner designs three tags each month for the class. She also showcases a new product at each class and often treats everyone in the class to the product!! Yeah, it doesn't get much better than that! Wendy is beyond creative, so each month I look forward to what she has in store for us!!

As you can see from these gorgeous tags, she never disappoints!

 Pookie and I go every month to the tag class. There are always so many friendly talented ladies there. I love crafting with such a fun group!!

 Below is a picture of the three tags together that we made in June.

 I can't pick a favorite, I love them all!!

 How are you spending the holiday this year? We will watch the fireworks at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks Nevada. The Nugget generously puts on a great fireworks display every year. I am hoping for a thunderstorm free day tomorrow, keep your fingers crossed for us northern Nevadans.
